Blue light protection built into the lens

It is recommended to use protection against blue light when there is high exposure to the use of monitors, mobile phones or screens. Blue light is a topic that has gained attention lately in terms of optical health. The reason for so much interest is that overexposure to screens is causing health problems.

Work and entertainment dependence on electronic devices has generated great limitations and conditions due to high exposure to this type of light. A quick solution is anti-blue light glasses.

Do you know why the sky is blue? It is because the sun generates blue light, whose dispersion capacity is greater than that of other light spectrums. This type of light wave is one of the most powerful because it is close to ultraviolet light.

Our eyes have protection against natural blue light from this type of light, but not from screens in general.

There are also artificial sources of blue light in tablets, phones and computers. The radiation and intensity that comes from screens is much less than that of the sun. However, excess exposure to these means of communication, work and entertainment has been the source of negative effects.

Among the consequences of blue light are dryness, fatigue and eye redness, insomnia, headaches, among other symptoms. Glasses that block blue light have proven to be an alternative to improve these discomforts.

Anti-blue light glasses have a filter that reduces the percentage of waves belonging to this spectrum. Even so, it is important to note that the lens does not isolate all of the bluish illumination that reaches the retina.

Protection measures against blue light

It is necessary to take some precautions to protect against blue light, in addition to wearing glasses, in order to reduce its harmful impact. Among these measures, the recommended ones are the following:

  • Rest periods: the highest concentration of blue light is absorbed by the eyes. Looking away from your computer, phone, or tablet every 25 minutes while wearing blue light protective glasses will decrease your exposure.
  • Wear blue light glasses: Blue block glasses minimize the volume of blue light that enters the retina. Thanks to this, it is possible to combat the side effects of spending too much time viewing a screen.
  • Activate night mode on mobile phones: it is a setting available on all smart devices that reduces brightness. The night mode changes the spectrum from blue and white to a yellowish or whitish tone that adapts to the lighting of the environment.
  • Leave screens at night: one of the factors that cause insomnia and fatigue is using the smartphone or computer at night.  Therefore, it is advisable to eliminate screens at least 3 hours before going to sleep.

How does blue light affect us?

Anti-blue light glasses have the ability to help mitigate the symptoms caused by the abuse of electronic devices. Negative effects affect cognitive performance, sleep and eye health:

  • It generates insomnia: the LED light present in digital devices damages the eyes and disturbs sleep because it radiates waves of the bluish spectrum. This exposure causes the inhibition of melatonin, a hormone responsible for regulating sleep and wake cycles. It is for this reason that falling asleep is difficult.
  • It alters the circadian rhythm: as the production of melatonin is blocked, the biological clock or circadian rhythm becomes disordered. In this sense, the person experiences mood swings, fatigue, irritability and depression. Cognition problems could even arise.
  • Macular degeneration: Blue light can cause a condition called degenerative macular disease. The waves of this spectrum reach the macula of the eye, destroying the cells found there. The best way to avoid this is by using blue block crystals.
